Aptamers are increasingly being used as alternative ligands for affinity separations in bioprocessing. Due to their nucleic-acid based high affinity, they are a markedly better alternative to antibodies. Aptamers show a higher affinity and specificity for some ligands that cannot be recognized by antibodies, such as ions or small molecules. They more easily recover their native conformation, whereas antibodies easily undergo irreversible denaturation.
More recently, aptamers are being immobilized to magnetic beads to improve the specificity and sensitivity of enzyme detection.
